Of all the countries in the world, only Russia and North Korea pose a nuclear threat to the United States, Pentagon Ashton Carter has stated. At a meeting with soldiers in North Dakota, he said: “Russia has long since been a nuclear power. But Moscow’s recent saber-rattling and the creation of new nuclear systems (arms) raises serious questions about its leaders' commitment to strategic stability, their regard for long-established accords against using nuclear weapons, and whether they respect the profound caution that Cold War-era leaders showed with respect to brandishing nuclear weapons.”
I have to disappoint Mr. Carter. The main threat to the world and nuclear security is his own country. If the US did not force its “democracy on paper” into every nook and cranny, including the countries of the post-Soviet world, then Russia would not have the slightest reason to react strongly to this “democratic aggression,” including by threatening to use force. It is America, with the Messianic role that it has assigned to itself, its infantile belief in its own uniqueness, and the foolish cowboy belief in the need to shoot first and think later, that makes this country the most dangerous and unpredictable member of the international community.
The US has given itself the right to personally decide which countries are bad and which are good, which ones should be given IMF loans, and which ones should be mercilessly bombed. It would be strange if other peoples, especially those capable of effectively responding to America, silently endured such a mess. Even the Philippines, a longtime American ally, has now turned away from the US and no longer has the patience to tolerate such an arrogant dictatorship.
If the US had not incited their watchdog Saakashvili to military provocations in Georgia, then Russia would not have revised and tightened its military doctrine. If Washington had then not gone on to Hitler-like backstabbing by seizing Ukraine, then Russia would not have responded in Crimea and Donbass. Moreover, Russia would not be in such a haste to rebuild itself into a military power.
Sorry, but when the world’s largest power refuses to take Russian interests into account to such an extent that it is ready to turn fraternal Ukraine against Russians into an anti-Russian military base three hundred kilometers from Moscow, then America has only itself to blame.
Alexander Haig, the former US Secretary of State during the Cold War, once said: “There are things more important than peace.” America thinks that Russia looks at these “things” in a different way. When it comes to national security or the very existence of Russian statehood itself, then peace cannot be the most important thing for Russia. Pushing Russia to such a state, and then acting surprised that “Russia is saber-rattling nuclear weapons” will cost America a lot. Indeed, they are making a very expensive bet.
