Precipitated by a women's demonstration and gaining the right to vote, March 8th was declared a national holiday in Soviet Russia in 1917. It was then adopted in 1975 by the United Nations. The 8th of March, International Women's Day, is widely celebrated in the the former Soviet bloc - perhaps like nowhere else in the world.
From Vladivostok in the East, to the Western-most point in Kaliningrad, women receive gifts and flowers from their husbands, boyfriends, fathers and colleagues. An annual address from the President follows suit, and this year, also a message from the International Space Station.
In Western Ukraine, like most festivities which carry a remotely Russian legacy, the 8th of March has not been left out. It too has suffered political attacks as a cultural remnant of a Soviet past (see @7.33)
A Russian group of volunteers also took the March 8th campaign to the streets in New York City. Ironically, the earliest Women's Day observance was held on February 28, 1909, in New York City (@10.25)
