Mustafa Kemal, known as Atatürk (Mustafa Kemal Atatürk), the "Father of the Turkish people" created a democratic parliamentary republic in post-Ottoman Turkey in 1921. After almost 100 years Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who considers himself the reincarnation of Ataturk, is trying to destroy this republic, writes Arseny Kamatozov in the article "Turkish Zigzag", published in the German Russian-language journal "Russian Germany",  and continues:

On April 16 Turkey held a referendum initiated by Erdogan. The score was 51.4:48.6 in favor of Erdogan. I was personally impressed with the results! Just imagine a repressive machine has been in overdrive since the summer in Turkey, strangling and jailing dissidents. The country is in the state of emergency. Tens of thousands of Erdogan's opponents are in prison, hundreds of thousands are fired and are under the gun, any dissident is immediately considered an enemy of the state — and half of the country voted against Erdogan! I am in awe of the courage of the Turks!

By the way, German Turkey was unfortunately closer to Erdogan than his homeland: 63% of Turks living in Germany voted for to transfer the authority to the president. However, the turnout in Germany was much lower than at home — of the 1.4 million voters only about 700,000 got to the polls.

Meanwhile the Turks of Russia and the USA, for example, rejected Erdogan's plan at the ratio of 78:22.

Yes, this referendum was a humiliating slap in the face to our integration policy towards Turkish citizens. Germany in the Turkish sense — is a remote village. Because the general statistics show that in Turkey, with a slight margin the country-side triumphed at the referendum, the shawls and beards, by a few percent (we omit the possible and predictable cheating) defeated the European Turkey: the big cities, Istanbul, Ankara clearly voted against it.

And Erdogan has today launched the second referendum: unlimited power and two new terms are not enough, now he needs the death penalty. Of course, what is a Sultan without the death penalty? It's like a Pharaoh without a pyramid...

But I think that this is a temporary victory, as a freeze in April. Even Erdogan cannot destroy the secular European, Turkey, which is half of the country. Besides, having absorbed the powers of the prime minister, the parliament, the commander-in-chief and even the Highest legal council, the president has become too vulnerable to a potential coup. Because last summer, unseating Erdogan, the military was bound to deal with the prime minister and parliament, and with the Supreme council of judges and prosecutors. After the referendum all their most important functions will transfer to president Erdogan. Or the one who the people in uniform — in theory — can put in his place...

Because in Turkey traditionally the military interferes in the course of the government. Since 1960 there were five such interferences, the sixth one last year had failed. Rather, its direct result is what's happening today in what was recently Germany's brotherly country of Germany.

P.S.  Perhaps we cannot be so sure about Turkey's European future...
