French Interior Ministry announced that participation in the first round of the French presidential election is facing a slight decline when compared to the elections in 2012 and 2007.
By 5:00 pm, local time, the voter turnout was estimated at 69,42%, which is slightly lower when compared to both, 2007 (73,87%) and 2012 (70,59%) elections.
The ministry also said that a polling station in the eastern town of Besançon had to be evacuated, after a stolen car with a running engine and no presence of the driver, was discovered.
According to Reuters, a suspicious car was discovered and had fake license plate numbers. This eventually prompted the officials to evacuate the polling station. Later the bomb experts arrived and examined the car.
The first round of presidential elections in France went off high amid high security concerns.
The security officials warned that the extremists could carry out attacks during the election process.
7000 soldiers and 50000 policemen are currently on duty to grant the safety on some 70000 polling stations.
More than 230 people were killed in terror attacks across France in the past 2 years.
