Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar recently conducted an interview with Alexander Zasypkin, Russian Ambassador to Lebanon. Among the things discussed, there was of course the Khain Sheikhoun incident and the related US strike on Syria.

During an interview, Zasypkin affirmed that Russia does not accept the illegal US aggression against Syria and fully support the right of Syria to preserve its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, a thing that was also clearly pointed out during the meeting between the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, last week in Moscow.

Zasypkin revealed that during the meeting, Tillerson made several attempts to change Russia's position towards the crisis in Syria, saying that “Russia will not accept the alleged solutions of the US on ending the crisis Syria, rather, it will only accept those which are prepared in accordance with the international law and do not violate Syria's sovereignty or territorial integrity”, adding that “Russia will keep cooperating on solving the Syrian crisis the legal way such as through negotiations in Astana or Geneva and is ready to offer even more political assistance”.

He also discussed the new batch US sanctions against Hezbollah (and possible other March 8 Alliance political parties too), saying “the US is targeting Lebanon in order to spread its influence in the country”, adding “the sanctions, adopted by the US administration violate the norms of international law.”

He then said Russia is determined to boost the level of cooperation with Lebanon in all fields, military including as it has plans for a new military cooperation with Lebanon that would be beneficial for both countries in terms of terrorism-related problems and national security.
