Crimea’s Minister of Economic Development, Andrey Melnikov, says that Crimea should “philosophically respond” to the prolonging of Western sanctions which, although retarding the peninsula’s development, are incapable of stopping the peninsula from moving forward.
Sanctions were imposed on Crimea three years ago following the peninsula’s reunification with Russia and have since been automatically extended.
“As the sanctions are extended further, we should react to them absolutely philosophically and develop within the framework of those opportunities that we have. We probably would have developed faster without the sanctions, but the sanctions only slow down our development, they do not dominate us. They do not mean an investment famine nor a cessation of operations. They complicate life, but what does not kill us, makes us stronger. I proceed from this philosophical principle,” Melnikov said on Sputnik in Crimea Radio.
According to Melnikov, in the first three years of Crimean business the sanctions became more of a blessing than anything insofar as they prompted the establishment of special support measures.
“The free economic zone, and for some time the sanctions, have helped our local enterprises modernize, and this is a base from which the regional economy can move forward,” the minister emphasized.
