The official spokeswoman of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, believes that Montenegro’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Srdjan Darmanovic, is trying to justify to Montenegrins the country’s entry into NATO by accusing Russia of “interfering in the country’s internal affairs.”

While offering Russia’s National News Service a comment on Darmanovic’s statement, Zakharova recalled that Russia’s foreign ministry has more than once responded to Montenegrin politicians’ statements alleging a “Russian threat” and “Russian interference in domestic affairs.”

In Zakharova’s words, the Montenegrin people has “not bought into the idea” of joining NATO, hence the provoked hysteria.

“This is why no referendum has been held. [Montenegrin] officialdom is afraid to show the real figures that demonstrate the will of Montenegrins. Accordingly, it was decided that this will should be suppressed by coming up with stories of the ‘Kremlin’s hand’,” Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman said.

Previously, Montenegrin radio and television disseminated Darmanovic’s claim that Russia has “grossly interfered in Montenegro’s domestic affairs” and tried to prevent the government from joining NATO.

The final procedure for Montenegro obtaining NATO membership is scheduled for June 5th.

Montenegro’s Special Prosecutor, Milivoje Katnic, has claimed that some “Russian state organs” were involved in a coup attempt during the country’s elections in October of last year and aimed to prevent Montenegro’s accession to NATO. According to him, such conclusions are based on testimonies by defendants in the case.

The Kremlin has for its part emphasized that the accusations hurled at Moscow are too serious and irresponsible to be levied without presenting any evidence.
