Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said threats, issued by the US-led international anti-ISIS coalition, regarding Syrian Army’s recent advancements in Al Tanf area in the Syrian Desert, directly affect the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic, stressing that these issues need to be resolved.
“As you know, these were not only threats, but also indications about the specific use of force in that area. I think the situation is very alarming as it directly threatens the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic. These issues need to be resolved immediately,” said Lavrov at a press conference, held with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama on Tuesday.
“The work is going on and in accordance with the scope of the channel which was created earlier in order to prevent any potential incidents between the Russian Air Force and the US-led international coalition. Everything could have been resolved much more effectively had the United States agreed to work and coordinate with us closely through this channel,” Lavrov added.
He then pointed out that results of this work will be shown at the forthcoming round of Astana talks on settlement of the Syrian crisis.
“We are ready to welcome the United States joining not only the attempts to avoid incidents but also our work on de-escalation zones,” Lavrov said.
On Monday, social network activists displayed photos of the leaflets, dropped by the US-led international coalition, that were allegedly warning the Syrian Army and its allies about possible consequences, should they make any advancements in Al Tanf.
It is noteworthy that in Al Tanf area, US, UK and Jordan are currently training jihadist groups, fighting against the Syrian Army and the aligned forces.
