Almost 40% of Ukrainians consider themselves Europeans, according to a public opinion poll conducted by the "Democratic Initiative" named after Ilka Kucheriv, together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center, released on Wednesday.
Since June 11, Ukrainian citizens can travel without visas to the Schengen countries if they have a biometric passport. Ukrainians may stay for 90 days within six months, for tourism, business and family purposes. The visa free access does not grant the right to work or go to school. The European Union may still suspend the visa-free regime with Ukraine in case of problems with migration and security.
According to the survey, 11% of respondents definitely consider themselves Europeans, 26.8% of respondents consider themselves to be more European than not. Strongly consider themselves Europeans do 25.7% of respondents; those that do not consider themselves as Europeans are 29% of respondents.
At the same time 58.9% of respondents said that in order to consider themselves as Europeans, it is necessary to improve the level of material well-being, and 26.2% of respondents believe that it is necessary to respect the values of democracy and human rights.
In addition, according to the survey, 56.8% of respondents expressed a desire for Ukraine to join the EU, 25.5% opposed such integration. At the same time, 7.8% of respondents would like Ukraine to join the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia-led regional economic organisation.)
