Initially, the jihadists hit a group of civilians and military personnel standing in line to withdraw their salary, and then sieged the building.

According to the first accounts the attack was executed with a car bomb. The bloodshed in Afghanistan does not stop. In Lashkar Gah, Helmand Province, in the southern region, an explosion in front of a bank caused at least 29 casualties and 50 wounded. However, the number of casualties is likely to increase.

The attack hit military and civilian clerks who stood in line outside a local bank to withdraw their salary. A group of armed men sieged the bank and a gunfight with the security forces followed.

Most of the victims are civilians. "We have received 46 patients, of whom 11  arrived dead," says Emergency, who has been operating in Lashkar Gah since 2004 at the only surgical center in the region. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the area is the usual scene of clashes between the Taliban and NATO forces. Approximately 80 per cent of the territory is under Taliban control.
