After 39 years Riyadh recognises the Camp David Accords - Like This Article

As agreed on 11 April 2016, Egypt finally delivered the islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh is now bound to comply with the Camp David Accords, according to which the landowner of the two islands cannot interfere with the strait movement and must allow free transit to Israeli ships.

President Sissi's decision has been very controversial and the Egyptian government, in spite of acquiring popular consent, had advanced the excuse of never having been the owner of the two islands. The facts are, however, unambiguous: Tiran and Sanafir belong to Cairo since the 1840 London Convention. In order to force Egypt to relinquish them, Saudi Arabia first blocked oil supplies, and then a $ 12 billion loan.

Recognition, in fact, of Camp David's 1978 agreements (i.e. the separate peace between Egypt and Israel) should lead to a softening in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Already in June 2015, Réseau Voltaire had reported on the secret agreement between Tel Aviv and Riyad, the role played by the Israeli army within the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, and the purchase from Israel, by the Saud family, of tactical atomic devices.

Saudi Arabia's recognition of the Camp David Accords should have major repercussions on the Palestinian question.
