Russia and Armenia have officially established a joint group of troops.
Already yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree, appointing Russian Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov as his official representative to the newly established Russian-Armenian form of a military alliance.
Back in November 2016, the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu and his Armenian counterpart Vigen Sargsyan, signed an agreement on establishing a joint military unit, known as the United Group of Troops, between the two countries.
The agreement was approved by the Russian President Vladimir Putin a month earlier.
According to the agreement, a group of both, Russian and the Armenian troops, will be deployed at the 102nd Russian Military Base in Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city.
“The main task of the United Group of Troops is to identify preparation of military aggression against Armenia and Russia in a timely manner and to repel it jointly with the armed forces of Armenia and Russia,” Sargsyan was heard saying.
Meanwhile, Azerbaijani officials expressed their discomfort with the new agreement, saying it clearly shows that Russia supports the Armenian side in Artsakh conflict.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan maintains very close relations with NATO countries and fully backs the Ukrainian side in the Donbass conflict.
According to Putin’s decree which was issued yesterday, the commander of the United Group of Troops gets appointed by the Supreme commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Russia.
The directives of the operative management, which are addressed to the group, are drafted by the southern military district of Russia and operative department of the General Staff of Armenian Armed Forces.
In times of peace, the commander of the group is accountable to the General Staff of Armenia, while during the times of conflict, the commander may also be accountable to the Commander of the Southern Military District of Russia.
