Syrian President Bashar Al Assad visited the Russia-operated Hmeimim Air Base on Tuesday.

Accompanied by Russian commanders, stationed at the base and the Russian Chief of the General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov, Al Assad has taken a closer look at several military aircrafts, among them the brand new Su-35 fighter jet, armored combat vehicles and various pieces of equipment.

He was also presented with the documents and other relevant material, discovered by Russian forces and which formerly belonged to terrorist groups.

Upon finishing his tour, President Al Assad wrote his entry to the visitor's book, which read “With the utmost happiness and pride, today I visited Hmeimim military base and met the heroic fighters and pilots who came from the friendly Russian Federation to Syria to contribute alongside their Syrian brethren, the heroes of the Syrian Arab Army, in defending righteousness, justice, rights of peoples that are sanctioned by international law, and human morals, and to join the Syrian people in defending their homeland, unity, sovereignty, resistance, struggle, and fight against the terrorists who come from all over the world.

Russia provided weapons and ammunition to support Syria in its war against terrorism, but more importantly it provided blood as well, which is the dearest thing a human can offer to his fellow human being. The Syrian people will not forget that their Russian brethren stood alongside them in this patriotic war. Salute to all the Russian fighters and to the leadership of Hmeimim base and the Russian military leadership, and the biggest salute of all to the President Vladimir Putin.”

Located southeast of the city of Lattakia, Hmeimim Air Base is operated by the Russian military and is frequently being used to carry out raids against ISIS and other terrorist groups.

In January 2017, Russia and Syria signed a treaty to lease the base to Russia for 49 years (extendable for further 25 years).
