The speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Andriy Paruby, has stated that he is in favor of legislation that propels the country's membership in NATO as a priority.

"After visiting the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Tbilisi, where we had an extremely fruitful dialogue with our allies and partners of the North Atlantic Alliance, we have decided that Ukraine's membership in NATO is a priority, to be carried out at a legislative level. The Verkhovna Rada has registered the bill 6470, in which we propose to amend the law of Ukraine for national security, that seeks to extend NATO membership to Ukraine."

Paruby also reminded that this year Ukraine will mark the 20th anniversary of the Charter on Distinctive Partnership with NATO.

Ed: One of the key principles of NATO membership is the absence of civil war or conflict in the country seeking to join the alliance.
