Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMU) issued a public statement, saying its forces thwarted an ISIS infiltration attempt west of the city of Karbala.
The statement also said the PMU troops managed to foil another infiltration attempt by ISIS in the Anbar province when the terrorists were trying to attack the PMU positions, leaving scores of them dead or wounded, while some managed to flee.
For his part, General Raed Shaker Jawdat, the chief of the Iraqi Federal Police, announced that progress was made after his troops stormed the southern axis of the old city in Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city.
During the operation, Federal Police units confronted several ISIS terrorists that were approaching from the western side and were trying to make their way further into the old city.
8 terrorists were killed, including 3 suicide bombers, and many more were left injured.
Jawdat also said his forces rescued about 40 families that were stuck in the midst of the booby-trapped houses in Bab Al Bid district of Mosul.
Meanwhile, field reports came, claiming very violent clashes between ISIS and the Iraqi forces are taking place at the heart of the old city in Mosul, with Iraqi Air Force raiding ISIS positions.
The Iraqi Federal Police units reportedly made some progress and managed to push some 100 meters ahead at the southern side of the old city, from direction of Ziouani mosque.
The progress was made, after receiving reinforcements from elite commando units, in order to completely liberate the Bab Al Bid district, where fierce clashes with ISIS terrorists are taking place in a locked area between Bab Al Bid and Bab Al Toub districts.
Since Wednesday evening when ISIS blew up the iconic Great Mosque of Al Nouri, known for its leaning minaret, the clashes in the old city of Mosul are only intensifying.
Yesterday, The Iraqi Federal Police announced liberation of the Hamidin mosque.
Later, an assault began to fully liberate the historic Church of Simeon in Mosul's old city.
It is expected that complete liberation of Mosul will be announced withing the few days.
