Alleged Jihadists attacked the Kangaba resort located on the outskirts of the capital Bamako, a facility catering for Westerners, particularly French and Germans.

Witnesses reported that terrorists at the time of the attack shouted "Allah Akbar," and the organisational sources talked of two casualties and approximately thirty hostages, then rescued by Special Forces and French military units.

According to sources the casualties are two off-duty UN military officers, while according to others the victims are two resort guards.

The political situation in Mali was normalised in 2013 through to the intervention of France, after the Mnla (Movement of the Liberation of Azwad), al-Qaeda Aqmi, Ansar Dine and Mujao (Movement for Uniqueness and Jihad In West Africa) attempted to secede the north of the country, de facto still in their hands.

Attacks such as today’s one are relatively frequent in Mali: on March 7, 2015, five – including three Europeans – were killed in a terrorist attack on the ‘La Terrasse’ restaurant in the Hippodrome district of the capital Bamako. On November 20, 2015, the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, one of the most high-end in Mali's capital, was targeted with 20 casualties.
