Social protests in Morocco are slowly, but effectively reaching a new stage.
On Wednesday, human rights and youth organizations called to organize a mass protest in front of the Ministry of Justice building in the Moroccan capital city of Rabat, in order to express solidarity with what they called “a serious violation of human rights in the city of Al Hoceima.”
Earlier this month, there have already been solidarity marches in Rabat.
Meanwhile, the activists reported that scores of people were wounded and some 50 arrested, following renewed clashes between protesters and security forces in the northern city of Al Hoceima, that has since October 2016 been caught in a protest wave.
According to reports in Moroccan media, the government has finally sent a delegation to meet with protesters and find out about their demands amid the attempt to try to speed up the pace of the projects, assigned for the city within the scope of the spatial development program for the entire region of Al Hoceima.
It is noteworthy that protesters are demanding an unconditional release of all political detainees, while the Moroccan government refuses to intervene under the pretext of “the independence of the judiciary.”
Protests in the city of Al Hoceima, which are first and foremost aimed at ending corruption in the country, have been going on since October 2016, after one of the local fishermen was crushed to death inside a garbage truck while trying to retrieve his fish.
