Putin cancels sanctions against Turkey - except on tomatoes - Like This Article

June 4, 2017 - Fort Russ News -

A government decree has been signed which cancels a number of restrictions on Turkish imports to Russia. In particular, Russia has once again allowed the import of Turkish fruit and vegetables - except tomatoes.

The document outlines the lifting of the ban on the import of the Turkish products such as rozen carcasses (chickens and turkey), cucumbers, apples, pears, grapes and strawberries.

Contracts for the importation of fruit were signed with other countries in the interim, however the ban on tomatoes was explained by the fact that the Russian agriculture industry must recapture the money spent on the planting and cultivation of tomatoes.

Before the embargo, 43% of all tomatoes coming to the Russian market were Turkish. The ban is promised to be cancelled after Russian producers recoup their investment.

Relations between Russia and Turkey deteriorated when the Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian military aircraft Su-24 in Syria, on November 24, 2015.
