Russia ranked fifth in Europe by the number of refugees accepted, according to the report "Global Trends: forced displacement in 2016," by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to estimates of the organization, in Russia there are 228, 990 people with refugee status. In Europe, most refugees were taken by Turkey (about 2.9 million), Germany (669,000), France (304,000) and Sweden (230 thousand).

Turkey is in the lead on this indicator among all countries of the world. Next comes Pakistan - 1.4 million people, and Lebanon, which accepted a million refugees.

During the conflict in the east of Ukraine, Russia took on 2.5 million refugees (2014 -2016). 

In 2016, the UN has recorded a record number of refugees in the world - 22.5 million people. The total number of internally displaced persons and refugees from the conflicts around the world has reached 65.6 million people.

Most of the refugees under UNHCR's mandate (84%) were taken by developing countries. At the same time Europe is experiencing the most serious migration crisis since the Second World War.
