A number of European countries have opposed the automatic renewal of anti-Russian sanctions by the EU, a senior European Union official said.

"There are several European countries who believe that the issue of renewal of sanctions cannot be relegated to an automatic bureaucratic procedure," the official said.

Earlier, European diplomacy chief Federica Mogherini said the EU would probably renew the sanctions because "no real progress has been made in implementing the Minsk agreements".

Relations between Russia and the European Union deteriorated due to the situation in Donbass where, in April 2014, Kiev launched a military operation against the popular republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, which announced their independence after the coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Western countries imposed a series of sanctions against Russia, with Moscow taking retaliation measures.

Russia has stated several times that it does not participate in the internal conflict, and does not support the militias or  send troops to Donbass. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is not subject to the Minsk agreements and that the sanctions imposed on it are counterproductive.
