Isis claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that left 6 killed and several injured at a west Kabul Shia mosque on Thursday evening.

The attackers hit the al Zahra mosque in the western suburbs of Afghanistan’s capital city, where a crowd of Shia worshipers had gathered to commemorate Layat al-Qadr – the Night of Power during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to government sources, the death toll could have been much higher, had it not been for the prompt intervention of the security forces that confronted and neutralised the attackers. After exchanging fire with the police, one of the attackers took shelter in the compound’s kitchen before detonating the device.

This suicide bombing is the latest in a string of terror attacks targeting Afghanistan’s minority Shia Hazaras community, and the third attack on a Shia mosque in Kabul since October.
