Sweden and Poland have expressed their support for the continuation of the anti-EU sanctions, Swedish Premier Stefan Löfven said after a meeting with Polish Premier Beata Szydło.

"We will keep the sanctions until Russia will implement the Minsk agreements," Löfven said, adding that the parties agreed on the need to "reduce the level of tension in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region."

In turn, Szydło said the parties discussed "relations with Russia, threats, signals from Russia that cause concern for on-going military exercises and exercises".

"We need to work and share information in this area. We believe this is a very important part of bilateral relations," he said.

Relations between Russia and the European Union have deteriorated due to the situation in Donbass, where in April 2014, Kiev launched a military operation against the popular republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, which announced their independence after the coup in Ukraine in February 2014. Western countries imposed a series of sanctions against Russia and Moscow has taken retaliation measures.

Russia has stated several times that it does not participate in the internal conflict, and does not support the militias or send troops to Donbass. Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is not subject to the Minsk agreements and that the sanctions imposed are counterproductive.
