The Ukraine will join NATO only where society is ready for it and the state has "democratic values", said the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Stepan Poltorak, on Friday in Brussels.
"If we talk about the prospects of joining the alliance, the prerequisite for joining is not only readiness of the armed forces and meeting of NATO standards but also the willingness of society to join the alliance " - Poltorak said.
He noted that Ukraine needs to build a democratic, European state, with certain values, which will be the main criterion. In addition, the Minister stressed that NATO fully supports the reform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and to reform in the country as a whole.
"Together we have created all the planning documents, including the development of the Ukrainian forces until 2020" - said Poltorak.
Ed: Of course, it is the absence of civil war that is one of the main criteria for joining NATO for any one country. So if 'becoming democratic' means ending the Donbass conflict, then the Western allies are unlikely to let that happen for Ukraine.
