Ukrainian security officials have stated that they have moved to a distance of 1.5 kilometers into the neutral zone of the Donetsk Basin, close to the Bakhmutskaya highway. These positions, as per the Minsk agreements, were supposed to be transferred to Kiev.

Leaders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have promised not to fire on the Donbass from 1 June, however ceasefire has not been properly observed to date.

After the foreign-funded February 2014 coup in Kiev, the residents of Donetsk and Lugansk regions did not recognize the legitimacy of the new leadership of the country, establishing self-proclaimed "people's republics". In response, Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation, funded primarily by the US, that has killed around 10 thousand people according to the UN - but estimates range to as much as 50,000.
