In a bid to break the stalemate in a war that started as far back as 2001, the Pentagon announced the intention to send almost 4,000 additional American military troops to Afghanistan, a Trump administration official said Thursday.

A string of lethal attacks carried out by ISIS in the capital city of Kabul could possibly have determined the decision to increase U.S. military presence in the region.

The call for what will become the largest deployment of military manpower under Trump’s presidency is in starch contrast to recent statements by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres who, during his visit to Afghanistan on June 14, said that “Peace is the solution […] the international community, the neighbouring countries [and] all those related to the Afghan crisis need to come together and understand that this is a war that has no military solution”.

During his visit, the Secretary-General also discussed security cooperation and international mobilisation against the terrorist threat with Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah.
