TASHKENT (TCA) — The government of Uzbekistan will implement measures for the advanced development of renewable energy and increase in the energy efficiency of the economy and social sector for 2017-2021, the Jahon information agency reported.
The program’s aim is to allow for the diversification of fuel balance through renewable energy sources (RES), the replacement of traditional fuels with RES, and the reduction of the share of traditional fuels (coal and natural gas) in electrical and heat production. Concurrently, future efforts aim at introducing energy saving technology and procedures in Uzbekistan’s production.
A total $5.3 billion will be invested in 810 projects by 2035. These include the reduction of energy intensity of production in basic sectors of the economy, with significant energy consumption per industrial production rate reduction for 25 Uzbek strategic enterprises.
In the framework of the program, new technologies will be introduced in the social and agricultural sectors.
Uzbekistan is also expected to significantly increase electricity production by 2025 by bringing the share of renewable energy sources from the current 12.7% to 19.7%. The share of hydropower will increase from 12.7% to 15.8%, solar energy - to 2.3%, and wind power - to 1.6%.
A significant reduction in the energy intensity of production is also expected- by 9.79 million tons of fuel equivalent.
