Donbass: a truce to allow harvests?
The two self-proclaimed republics of the Donbass report continued shelling by Ukrainian forces despite the agreement to establish a ceasefire regime, which entered into force on Friday night.
In 24 hours, the People's Republic of Lugansk (RPL) was the target of 89 projectiles and shells, Andrey Marochko, LPR spokesman at a press conference.
"Despite the "Truce of Bread" regime that came into effect on midnight June 24, the opponent has repeatedly violated the ceasefire regime. In total, 89 shells and projectiles were fired into the territory of the republic on its first day," he said.
Edouard Bassurin, spokesman for the military command of the People's Republic of Donetsk (RPD), reported 35 shells and projectiles fell in one day on the territory of this self-proclaimed Donbass republic.
"In addition, infantry combat vehicles, grenade launchers and small arms were used," he said.
Recall that the contact group on Ukraine, meeting Wednesday [June 21] in Minsk, agreed on a truce known as "Bread" in the Donbass. The agreement aims to stop hostilities along the line of contact during the harvest season between Midnight June 24 and August 31, said OSCE representative Martin Sajdik.
In 2014, the Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation against the republics of Lugansk and Donetsk, which unilaterally proclaimed their independence after the coup d'état in Ukraine in February of the same year. According to the UN, the conflict has already killed 10,000 people.
The settlement of the conflict was called for by a contact group in Minsk, which, since September 2014, has adopted three documents regulating efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
However, despite the ceasefire agreements, the exchanges of fire continue.
