German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier stressed the importance of a new de-escalation zone agreement, recently brokered by Russian and American officials in Hamburg, saying it likely marks the beginning of the real settlement of the Syrian crisis.

“During our meeting we talked in detail about the situation in Syria, and we came to a conclusion that although the agreement, reached between the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, will not end the crisis in Syria right away, it's certainly paving the road that would eventually lead us to a solution that would end the crisis entirely”, Steinmeier was heard saying at today’s press conference, held with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Kazakh capital city of Astana.

Last week at a G20 summit in Hamburg, Russian and American officials reached a compromise on establishing de-escalation zones within southwestern Syria, with the purpose of finally ending the war that has been devastating the country since 2011.
