NATO exercises "Sea Breeze 2017" began today near Odessa, according to the press service of the Ukrainian Navy. In the early 2000s, such maneuvers were carried out in the Crimea, but then were moved from the peninsula due to the mass protests of local residents. In Odessa, the local deputies also voted for a ban on the exercise of the North Atlantic alliance, but their opinions were ignored by Kyiv.

The training will involve 31 ships and boats, 29 aircraft, and more than 3 thousand personnel.

The Ukrainian side emphasized "the importance of the planned activities in terms of improving the overall capacity to strengthen maritime safety, particularly in the Black Sea region, a region that today is in crisis in connection with the annexation of the Crimea and the Russian Federation in the East of Ukraine events".

The exercise will be carried out on the territory of Odessa and Nikolaev regions, offshore test sites in the North-Western part of the Black Sea. The training will last until 23 July.
