Armenian armed forces have fired on the settlements on the contact line in Karabakh. There are dead and wounded, as has been reported by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

"There has been shelling of settlements near the village of Fuzuli region Alhanly. The shelling was carried out using artillery. There are dead and wounded among the villagers, "- said the Ministry of Defense.

The Karabakh conflict began in February 1988, when the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast declared its withdrawal from Azerbaijan, USSR. In September 1991, the establishment of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) was announced. Azerbaijani authorities during the subsequent military conflict lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Since 1992, the negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the conflict have taken place within the OSCE Minsk Group. Azerbaijan insists on preserving its territorial integrity, Armenia protects the interests of the breakaway republic, as Karabakh is not a party to the negotiations.

Last year, provocations took place in this region also, which were largely blamed on outside intelligence services.
