Poland hopes to diversify Russian gas imports by purchasing liquefied gas, says Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski in an interview with RAR.
"The contract with the US will guarantee political stability", Waszczykowski said.
According to him, one of the central talks with US President Donald Trump, who will travel to Warsaw next week, will be energy cooperation. "We are very interested in cooperation in the energy sector," the Minister said.
On Thursday, US President Trump will conduct negotiations with Poland's President Andrzej Duda, and will meet leaders of the "three seas" countries (Black Sea, Baltic and Adriatic countries).
"We have built a terminal for the discharge of liquefied gas, we will expand the gas pipeline network in Europe, which could be of interest to the United States, which has begun delivering liquefied gas. We want to diversify gas imports not only on our market but also on the Ukrainian and Central European ones”, said Waszczykowski.
He noted that the entire gas market in Central and Eastern Europe could be of interest to the US. "Our market is too small, but together with other countries in the region we would be a segment for which it would be worth fighting. Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania could become importers and Croatia is interested in building a terminal to receive liquefied gas from the USA”, said the Polish Minister.
"In addition to the price, the contract with the US guarantees us political stability and independence of gas deliveries from political circumstances”, said Waszczykowski.
Poland has not yet decided whether to extend the gas import contract through the Yamal gas pipeline that will expire in 2022. The Foreign Minister said this will depend on the construction of the Baltic Pipe pipeline.
