On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced it has set up 2 checkpoints and 10 observation centers alongside the border of a new de-escalation zone in the southwest of Syria, in addition to 2 checkpoints and 4 observation centers in the embattled Damascene district of Eastern Ghouta.

Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lt.Gen. Sergei Rudskoy, affirmed that on July 21st and 22nd, Russia deployed its military police to monitor the execution of a ceasefire agreement for the southwest of Syria and on Monday in Eastern Ghouta.

Rudskoy pointed out that Russian interference contributed to halt the military activities activities in two strategically important areas, a thing crucial to maintaining ceasefire, adding that humanitarian convoys have already entered those areas, while also stressing that a new de-escalation zone agreement for Idleb province is in the making, with more details to be revealed after the next round of Astana talks on settlement of the Syrian crisis, is finished.

The Russian official noted that the guarantor states signed an agreement on forming a joint working group to reduce tensions in Syria, adding that the first meeting is expected to be held in the beginning of August.

He also revealed that since June 2017, at least 508 cities and towns in Syria now belong to the so-called “de-escalation zones”, with the total number of such settlements being 2043 at the moment.

Before finishing his speech, he said the Russian military jets conducted at least 2,000 sorties and carried out at least 5850 airstrikes on terrorist targets in Syria, during the last two months alone, adding that Russian forces used high-precision long-ranged weapons, with at least 10 terrorist targets being destroyed by Kalibr cruise missiles and strikes of the Tu-95MC strategic bombers.
