A State Duma deputy from the Communist Party, Nikolai Kharitonov suggested to sever diplomatic ties with Poland and withdraw from the country the Russian ambassador in Warsaw, in light of the adoption of the law on demolition of Soviet monuments.

He emphasized that in Poland over 600,000 soldiers of the Red Army were killed in WWII.

Earlier, deputy chairman of the faction "Fair Russia". Oleg Nilov .offered Poland to exhume the remains of Soviet soldiers buried during the Great Patriotic War, and bring them back to Russia.

In June, the Polish parliament passed the law, involving the demolition of about 500 monuments, "glorifying communism". According to the calculations of the Institute of National Remembrance in Poland, this affects about 230 monuments to the Red Army.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Poland 'did not want to leave memorials that perpetuate the memory of unwanted authorities, events and dates.' It stressed that the authors of the "war with the monuments" provoke further aggravation of Russian-Polish relations.

Russia has appealed to the UN to give public assessment of the Polish law.
