Six British out of ten would like to retain European citizenship after Brexit, and are even willing to pay for it; the Guardian reports quoting a research conducted by the London School of Economics (LSE).
60% of respondents would like to retain the right to reside, work, study, and travel to the European Union after Brexit, and are willing to pay more than £ 400 to retain this privilege.
"It is paradoxical that – to maintain this right – they are willing to pay more the contributions of UK citizens to the European budget”, commented Michael Bruter, professor of political science at LSE. He added that the youth is strongly "unsatisfied" with the prospect of losing these rights.
According to the data, 85% of respondents who would like to maintain European citizenship are British citizens aged between 18 and 24. Almost 80% of Londoners expressed their support for the preservation of these rights.
The results also indicate that 10% of respondents support the British Government's proposal to deprive EU citizens of voting rights in the United Kingdom, while 73% argue for the maintenance of this right and 48% of the respondents suggest to extend the right to vote from local to general elections.
