Israeli decision to hold the first ever local village council elections in the Druze villages in the Golan Heights, has already drawn negative response from the Druze community leaders and chief religious figures, fearing they might impose certain social and religious changes, not wanted by the community.
The move has also drawn harsh criticism of the Israeli Internal Affairs Minister Arieh Deri because he made such provocative decision in the already contested area, amid the height of the war in Syria, in addition to not even consulting with the Druze community elders and the chief religious figures.
According to the sources, critical of the elections, Deri’s move calls for the “Israelization” of the Druze villages. Given the historic developments and the current state of events, such reactions were expected, with some already seeing Israel’s move as “highly regrettable.”
The decision to hold elections in the Druze villages in the occupied Golan Heights, has caused a lot of outrage, both locally and internationally.
The Syrian Council of Quneitra has already urged members of the Druze communities, living in the Golan Heights, not to participate in any Israeli-led political activities.
In a similar fashion, the government of Syria has filed a complaint to the United Nations for supposedly holding elections in the occupied territory, a thing otherwise opposed by international law.
Golan Heights are a home to a number of Druze villages and settlements that are, since 1967, being controlled by Israel, following the outcome of the 1967’s Six-day Arab-Israeli war.
