Israel has opposed the United States and Russia agreeing on a ceasefire in the south of Syria, as this could facilitate the consolidation of Iran's forces in the country.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said this to reporters after a meeting with French President, Macron on Sunday.

"Israel is aware of Iran's expansionist ambitions in Syria" - said Haaretz media.

Leaders of the Jewish state sees Iran as "the number one threat" in the region. Tel Aviv is concerned with Iran's nuclear project, its missile program, hostile rhetoric of the leadership and support of anti-Israel forces throughout the Middle East.

A ceasefire agreement in southern Syria has been approved by the presidents of Russia and the United States in bilateral talks in Hamburg at the summit of G20.

UN Special Envoy for Syria, Steffan De Mistura, praised the Russian-American initiative, and stated that the establishment of the ceasefire in southern Syria is a significant step in resolving the conflict.
