China plans to open its first overseas military base in the Republic of Djibouti in East Africa. The choice of location is dictated by the fact that Chinese warships will patrol the coast of Yemen and Somalia. That is, to ensure humanitarian operations, to maintain security and fight piracy.
China has stated that it has no plans for military expansion in the region, or exacerbation of an arms race. The base will be a logistics center, where the fleet will be able to replenish supplies. Construction began in 2016, but exact completion date has not been reported.
