The Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al Jaafari said on Saturday  that the joint coalition of the Iraqi forces, consisting of the Iraqi Army, Federal Police Units and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) has so far managed to liberate about 80% of Tal Afar and its surrounding areas, the last major stronghold of ISIS in Iraq.

Already yesterday, the Iraqi forces liberated the center of Tal Afar and its historic citadel, as well as plenty of other areas.

On Saturday, Abdul Amir Rashid Al Yarallah, commander-in-chief of the ongoing operation said the Iraqi Army, the Iraqi Federal Police units and the Popular Mobilization Units are completing the liberation process and will soon take over the whole area.

“Today, the Iraqi Federal Police units and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) liberated the neighborhoods of Qadisiyah Al Oula, Qadisiyah Al Thaniye, and Al Rabiyeh in the city of Tal Afar”, Yarallah said, adding that the rest of the areas are expected to get liberated very soon.

In addition, the Iraqi forces managed to liberate the headquarters of the National Security Directorate in Tal Afar, located in the neighborhood of Al Kifah in the center of the city, thus becoming the first security institution to reopen in Tal Afar since the city was overrun by ISIS.

Over the past 2 days, the Iraqi forces have made some significant progress, while also inflicting heavy losses upon ISIS terrorists in terms of personnel and equipment.

“Our field engineering department managed to dismantle dozens of explosives and improvised explosive devices in the area of 14 km in Tal Afar. 54 explosives of different types and IEDs were dismantled in 35 homes, 15 sub-streets, in an area stretching from Al Tanak neighborhood to Sarai neighborhood, and all the way to Tal Afar dam”, PMU’s press office said.

The engineering units also cleared a 10 km road in Al Khadra neighbourhood, dismantling 33 bombs, detonating 28 others and removing 5.

Meanwhile, Iraqi military sources said the U.S. military convoy has reportedly hit a roadside bomb near Tal Afar. 6 American troops were reportedly injured.

On Friday, the Iraqi forces managed to retake more than half of the whole Tal Afar area, after breaking through ISIS defense lines.

On August 20th, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi officially announced the start of a major-scale operation to completely liberate Tal Afar and all of its surrounding areas.
