Iraqi forces are nearing their complete liberation of the northwestern city of Tal Afar and its surrounding areas, otherwise known as the last major ISIS stronghold in Iraq.
According to Iraqi military sources, the complete liberation of Tal Afar is only hours away now, given that more than 95% of Tal Afar has been liberated today. For comparison: on Saturday morning, the number was at 70%.
In the meantime, Iraqi forces keep breaking ISIS defense lines.
This comes after the Iraqi forces, whose joint coalition consists of the Iraqi Army, Federal Police and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), managed to liberate the city center and raised the Iraqi flag from the historic Tal Afar citadel.
According to the field reports, fighting is currently concentrated on Al Muthanna and Al Askari neighborhoods in Tal Afar.
As the Federal Police completed its task of liberating the neighborhoods of Qadisiyah Al Oula and Qadisiyah Al Thaniya in Tal Afar, and at least 76 ISIS terrorists surrendered themselves to the Iraqi forces, the Popular Mobilization Units discovered a large prison northwest of Tal Afar, with at least 18 bodies inside.
The PMU also reported that its second brigade was in control of the water station in Tal Afar, and was continuing to cleanse the area after its liberation.
A festive atmosphere is currently prevailing in Al Rabieh district, with Federal Police completing its task in this area of Tal Afar.
Al Mayadeen network was informed that the Iraqi forces obtained documents from which it was evident that senior ISIS officials in Tal Afar, demanded their commanders to assure the immediate replacement of their US-made weapons with Kalashnikovs, indicating that ISIS intended to change its combat strategy (and/or cover-up the origin of weapons).
The Iraqi forces entered the center of the city of Tal Afar and the historic old castle area after breaking through ISIS defense lines yesterday.
For his part, Yusuf Al Kalabi, one of the PMU leaders, said that the full coordination between the Iraqi Army and the PMU is what contributed to these rapid victories in the first place, adding that the demise of ISIS in Tal Afar will positively affect all those currently fighting the terrorist group, while also noting that the battle of Tal Afar differs from previous battles in terms of the real cohesion between different branches of the Iraqi forces.
