ISIS have left behind over 1,400 wives and children in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar after being completely expelled by Iraqi forces on 31 August.
The women and children left behind, who were mostly from Russia, Turkey, Central Asia and Europe, are now in Iraqi government custody.
The Iraqi government is currently negotiating with the women’s home country embassies for their returning home, but is finding this task difficult as most women have destroyed their original identification cards.
“I want to go back (to France) but don’t know how,” said a French-speaking woman of Chechen origin who claims to come from Paris.
Another woman claimed to have been tricked to join ISIS after her husband organised a holiday to Turkey.
“My mother doesn’t even know where I am,” said a French woman of Algerian descent. “I had just given birth to this little girl three months before… He said ‘let’s go for a week’s holiday in Turkey.’ He had already bought the plane tickets and the hotel,” she added.
