The Arab World Conference on the post-Balfour Declaration Middle East, organized by the Wadida Watan Foundation, kicked off in the Syrian capital city of Damascus on Saturday.

The conference hosts a number of Arab and Syrian researchers, writers, intellectuals and thinkers, who are discussing the challenges the Arab world is facing today, along with the mechanisms and visions for its future.

“The goal is to document the legacy and contributions of the intellectuals and writers who contributed to preserve homeland’s dignity, as well as to document the oral traditions with references to the official written history”, said the political and media adviser to the Syrian President and the head of the Board of Trustees of the Wadida Watan Foundation, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban.

“The first project is to document the history of what has been going on in Syria for the past seven years, without any distortions by the corporate media”, Shaaban said, noting that the dialogue here is objective, clear, constructive and organized in a way to prepare better grounds for the future generations, asserting that the goal here is to come up with a plan for an Arab strategy to guide the decision-makers.

“We are concerned about what our nation is passing through and about setting plans for confronting the challenges hatched against us. As of today, the term homeland is more important than ever”, Shaaban said, adding that today we are witnessing the disastrous results of what some falsely called the Arab Spring in a number of countries throughout the region.

The political and media adviser to the Syrian President called for raising the importance of a concept of homeland to the highest level in order to turn the citizens away from religious extremism and fanaticism. “We are concerned today about setting a future vision to spare the nation more pain”, she said.

Founded in June 2016, the Wadid Watan Foundation cares for oral documentation with the aim of preserving and documenting the national history and memory.
