NEW DELHI, India - Access to Russian social media service Vkontakte, or more commonly known as VK, was blocked in India on Tuesday according to VK's press service.

Indian internet companies started blocking access to VK in September.

It was supposedly in an effort to block the Blue Whale game, a game that encourages suicide, from gaining traction in India.

Russia’s Embassy in India helped VKontakte to contact India’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Representatives of the social network detailed all the tools and measures for ensuring the users’ security, TASS reported.

"Joint fight against illegal content on the platform will continue," VKontakte said.
