The Russian Foreign Ministry said that there is no credible basis for imposing a new batch of Washington's sanctions against Syria due to the of the lack of evidence that the chemical weapons were used by Damascus as Washington claims.

Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, questioned the legitimacy of sanctions, which were prepared in the wake of the Khan Sheikhoun incident, despite the fact there is no evidence that chemical weapons were used by Damascus.

"We proposed sending an independent team of experts to find out the truth, surrounding the Khan Sheikhoun incident. Unfortunately, the Americans did not support our initiative", Gatilov was heard saying.

The US government imposed new sanctions against Syria, this time aimed at state institutions and also include 271 employees of the National Research Center whom the Americans are baselessly accusing of being involved in production of chemical weapons that were later used in an attack on the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idleb province, back on the 4th of April.

No evidence that chemical weapons were used has been provided so far. The government in Damascus also denied (and since refuted) the accusations.
