Staffan de Mistura, UN’s special envoy for Syria, has finally met with delegation of the so-called “armed Syrian opposition” in Astana.

Previously, representatives of the terrorist groups, fighting against the Syrian Army, said they will not participate in Astana talks due to the ongoing conflict between Jaysh Al Islam and their rivals from Al Nusra Front and Al Rahman Brigade.

In a press statement right after the meeting, the UN envoy said that he plans to hold another meeting with the delegation of the so-called “armed Syrian opposition” later in the day, indicating the signs of progress in first round of negotiations, by saying that “remarkable progress” was achieved.

The delegation of the so-called “armed Syrian opposition” also met with the US delegation, headed by Stuart Jones, Assistant to the US Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, despite their previous announcement of withdrawing from negotiations.

For his part, Aydar Bek Tomatov, head of the Asian and African Countries Department at Kazakh Foreign Ministry, said the delegation of the “armed opposition” will continue its participation in the talks tomorrow, adding that its members they gave no pre-conditions for the arrival in Astana.

The fourth round of Astana talks on settlement of the Syrian crisis will continue (and end) on Thursday.
