On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, the German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel today begged the international community for support in dealing with the global migrant/refugee crisis.

“We can no longer deal with these challenges alone, we need joint international efforts that would provide more equitable distribution of responsibility in order to alleviate the suffering of refugees all over the world, and prevent the prolonging of the crises”, Gabriel was heard saying.

He added that German efforts are also focused on the protection of refugees in their countries, saying that in the past 5 years, Germany greatly increased its budget to provide humanitarian aid for displaced Syrians.

According to Gabriel, Germany spent 1.3 billion Euros ($ 1.45 billion) last year alone on aid, thus becoming one of the most “generous” countries in the world in terms of humanitarian spending.

It is noteworthy that in the last couple of years, Germany received more than a million refugees and migrants, majority of whom are said to have fled wars in Africa and the Middle East.
