The Russian Defense Ministry is said to be checking on information, claiming that Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, was reportedly killed in a Russia-led airstrike in Syria.
According to the reports, the Russian Su-34 jet and an Su-35 multirole fighter carried out several airstrikes in the vicinity of Raqqa, the main stronghold of ISIS, located in northern Syria, on May 28th, the ministry said.
The strikes allegedly targeted a meeting of high-profile ISIS officials, with Al Baghdadi himself reportedly being present.
“According to information that is being checked through various channels, IS leader Ibrahim Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed as a result of the strike, was also present at the meeting,” Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
