The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro, Serdzhan Darmanovich, has been awarded in a ceremony of the US State Department a document on the country's accession into NATO.
Today, Montenegro has officially become a member of NATO.
"Accession of Montenegro is a testament to the fact that NATO's door remains open to those countries that want to carry out reforms necessary to meet the high standards of the alliance, and are ready to take all the risks associated with membership, obligations and benefits", -states the US State Department.
According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who was present at the ceremony, the accession of Montenegro to NATO is "good for its own sake" and for stability in the Western Balkans.
On June 7, Montenegro flags will be raised at the NATO headquarters in Brussels, the Supreme Command of Allied Forces in Europe in the Belgian city of Mons, and the NATO Strategic Command for Transformation in Norfolk (Virginia) in the United States.
The decision to invite Montenegro into NATO was made in December 2015. In May of this year, the foreign ministers of member countries of the alliance signed a protocol on the country's accession to the organization.
Defense spending of Montenegro is much smaller than any of the NATO allies. The opposition, led by the Democratic Front movement, does not recognize this accession and has warned of the impending loss of the Republic's independence in foreign affairs, as well as the deterioration of the traditional friendly relations with Moscow and Belgrade.
