A mosque, banning all sorts of facial veiling, niqabs and burqas including, has opened up inside a Protestant church in the German capital city of Berlin.

The mosque is headed by Seyran Ates, a German citizen of Turkish origins who claims there is no space for the burqas and niqabs anywhere in the mosque as they are expressing politics and not religion.

The Ibn Rushd-Goethe mosque, which is named after the well known Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes) and an iconic German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, will encourage men and women, Sunnis and Shias to pray together and is said to be welcoming people from the LGBT community.

Ates, herself a feminist, peace activist and a lawyer, said it was better for herself to start her own mosque rather than keep complaining about the conservative practices in the German mosques.

Due to financial limitations, the mosque is currently is renting its space from the Protestant St. Johannes Church, while Ates herself hopes the mosque will one day have its own space.
