The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed into law the prohibition of the manufacture and promotion of St. George ribbons in the country. The relevant law was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on May 16, 2017. According to Poroshenko, St. George's ribbons are not 'symbols of the Second World War. "
Under the new law, a public demonstration of the St. George ribbon will result in a fine of 850 hryvnia to 2550 hryvnia, with confiscation of the ribbon. Moreover, for repeated violations of the law, a fine of up to 5,100 hryvnia (about $ 200) can be issued or administrative arrest for 15 days.
Ironically, the penalty does not apply to World War II veterans, whose medals and awards carry the colours and the design of the St. George ribbon.
It would seem, changing of historical narrative will become much easier once the older generation passes on.
