The Russian President has taken part in a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana. SCO leaders signed the convention on combating extremism and supported accession of India and Pakistan into the structure. In 2017, the SCO includes Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. India and Pakistan have now become full members also, after two years of preparation.
"It is repeatedly said that the main threat to the security of SCO member states is primarily terrorism. The fight against this evil it is important, uniting the efforts of the entire international community" - said, Vladimir Putin who opened the meeting. "In the framework of our Organization and its specialized agencies, such joint work is being done. At the same time, we establish equally efficient interaction with other partners, outside of our organization. We see what is happening in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East in general. And I must say that the political situation in the United States is not conducive to ensuring that the work of the international format is on a constructive, systemic level."
"According to reports, ISIS is preparing new plans for destabilization in Central Asia and the southern regions of Russia, so we need to strengthen the coordination of special services of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, including the regional anti-terrorist structure" - stressed Putin.
Vladimir Putin also proposed to entrust the Foreign Ministers of the SCO member states to work out options for resolving the crisis in Afghanistan, which is an observer in the organization.
"We consider it important to resume the work of the Contact Group of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization - Afghanistan", suspended in 2009. Apparently, not all countries - NATO members, want to be involved in this work. Almost no one wants to return to full mode. "
The meeting continued with participation of the heads of delegations of observer countries in the SCO and international organizations.
The head of the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Antiterrorist Structure, Eugene Sysoev, said that through the coordination of actions of members of the organization managed to prevent 40 terrorist crimes, including 16 terrorist attacks. In total, 100 members of extremist organizations were detained.
Similarly, SCO Secretary-General, Rashid Alimov, told reporters that member countries are in support the Chinese- lead idea of integration of "One Belt - One Way."
